It is with a grateful heart that I welcome you to the website of St. Alphonsa Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. Our parish is a vibrant community of faith, rooted in the apostolic tradition of St. Thomas the Apostle and inspired by the holy life of our patron, St. Alphonsa. From humble beginnings, our community has grown into a spiritual family where the Holy Qurbana, sacraments, catechism, and fellowship continue to nourish us and strengthen our Catholic identity.
We are especially blessed to be undertaking the construction of our new church-a long-cherished dream of our families. This sacred project is not just about brick and mortar, but about building a spiritual home where generations can encounter Christ, celebrate their faith, and carry forward our rich Syro-Malabar liturgical heritage. I invite each of you to pray for this mission, to support it in whatever way you can, and to remain united in love and service.
May this website be a window into the life of our parish-its liturgies, ministries, catechetical programs, and community events. I warmly encourage you to stay connected, participate actively, and help us make our parish a true home of faith and fellowship.
Through the intercession of St. Alphonsa, may the Lord bless you and your families with peace, joy, and abundant grace.
With prayerful regards,
Fr. Anto G. Alappat
Vicar, St. Alphonsa Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, Austin, Texas
The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is one of the 23 Eastern Catholic Churches in full communion with Rome. We traces our origin to the apostolic mission of St. Thomas the Apostle, who, arrived in India in A.D. 52 and established Christian communities along the Malabar Coast (present-day Kerala State of India). For centuries these “St. Thomas Christians” preserved an East-Syriac liturgical and spiritual heritage, while being administratively linked at times to both the Church of the East and later to Latin missionaries after the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century.
The Syro-Malabar Catholics were formally recognized by Rome as a distinct church in 1887, and a separate hierarchy was established in 1923. The church was elevated to Major Archiepiscopal status in 1992.
Today, the Syro-Malabar Church is the second-largest Eastern Catholic Church (after the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church), numbering over 5 million faithful worldwide, with a strong presence not only in Kerala but also in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. Our hallmark is the East-Syriac liturgy (the Holy Qurbana), enriched by Indian culture and traditions, and its mission continues through dioceses and parishes serving Syro-Malabar Catholics around the globe.
